PUTRAJAYA, 14 April 2025 – Malaysia is reeling from the news of the passing of the fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who returned to his Creator today. Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in an emotional statement, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of a dear friend and towering national figure.

Recalling his final visit to Tun Abdullah, fondly known as Pak Lah, Anwar said the memory remains etched in his heart. “When I visited him in his frail state, our hands touched, and his clouded eyes still radiated love and an unyielding peace,” he said, reflecting on the poignant moment.

As a leader, Pak Lah was renowned for his calming presence in the often turbulent political landscape. Anwar praised his magnanimous spirit, noting how Pak Lah welcomed him with grace despite their past political differences. “That was the greatness of Pak Lah – a man who led with humanity,” he said.

Tun Abdullah left behind a remarkable legacy through his Islam Hadhari approach, balancing progress with moral values. Under his leadership, Malaysia saw judicial reforms, greater administrative transparency, and strengthened institutions. He also championed public participation and drove economic growth through the Ninth Malaysia Plan, focusing on human development and rural progress.

“Beyond his achievements, Pak Lah taught us the meaning of compassionate leadership. He led without anger, without clinging to power, and with a voice that remained gentle despite relentless challenges,” Anwar said, recalling Pak Lah’s serene demeanor.

Anwar also reflected on his own dark moments, where Pak Lah never added to his pain with harsh words. “He chose peace, even when it would have been easy to retaliate,” he added.

Extending heartfelt condolences to Pak Lah’s family, including Tun Jeanne and Khairy Jamaluddin, Anwar said the entire nation shares their grief. “Farewell, Pak Lah. Malaysia owes you a debt of gratitude for your service and wisdom. May his soul be placed among the righteous and forgiven of all shortcomings,” he said.

The passing of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi closes a significant chapter in Malaysia’s history, but his legacy as a leader of the people will endure.
