IPOH, 16 April 2025 – The Perak State Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader has been suspended from attending assembly sessions for six months due to racially charged and seditious statements made during a sitting. This disciplinary action is seen as a firm stance against the culture of slander, which is strictly prohibited in all religions.
According to a media statement by Perak State Executive Councillor and Pasir Bedamar Assemblyman, Woo Kah Leong, the Opposition Leader has a notorious record of defamation, with a “track record” targeting figures such as Anwar Ibrahim, Nizar Jamaluddin, Lim Guan Eng, Nga Kor Ming, and many others. He has been ordered to issue public apologies and pay hundreds of thousands in damages, significantly undermining his credibility and public trust as a political leader.
“The six-month suspension is actually a light punishment compared to his history of slander. The culture of defamation must stop immediately, and the Perak opposition needs to reflect,” said Woo.
He emphasized that the opposition, particularly Perikatan Nasional (PN), should act as a constructive check and balance by raising pertinent questions about state development, public issues, and state policies, while fostering mature democracy. Woo also expressed hope that the Perak State Legislative Assembly would set an example, free from slander.
“As a State Assemblyman, I want the assembly to be a platform we can be proud of, not a place for spreading slander,” he added.
