Bentong, 9 April 2025 – The Member of Parliament for Bentong, Young Syefura Othman, expressed deep sorrow and dismay over the increasing reports of incest cases that are undermining the family institution in the country. She described these incidents as a reflection of the erosion of values in today’s society.
“Reading this news breaks our hearts and fills us with regret. We need to ask ourselves, where did we go wrong? What are our children watching, learning, and taking as examples?” Young Syefura questioned in a statement today.
She urged parents and communities to be empowered with digital awareness to ensure inappropriate content is blocked from being accessed by children through their devices. “Parents need to know not only how to restrict content but also who their children are associating with,” she added.
According to Young Syefura, early exposure and education on sexual matters must be implemented, whether at school or at home, as a preventive measure. “The rise in incest cases is a sign of the fracturing of the family institution, which should serve as a stronghold of safety for our children,” she said.
She also emphasized the need to provide psychological support and protection for children against the widespread availability of pornographic content online. In this regard, she supports proposals to prohibit children under the age of 13 from using smartphones. However, she stressed that laws alone are insufficient without active parental involvement.
“Parents must take primary responsibility because it all begins at home,” Young Syefura asserted, calling for immediate action to address this increasingly alarming issue.
