BATANG PADANG, 11 April 2025 – The Department of Fisheries Malaysia today held the Handover Ceremony of the Inland Fishermen’s Jetty and Fish Seed Release at Kampung Sungai Ranggas, Tapah Road, Perak. This inaugural event aimed to enhance fisheries infrastructure and ensure the sustainable conservation of inland fishery resources.

The ceremony was officiated by Dato' Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar of Perak, attended by Dato' Mohd Zolkafly bin Harun, Chairman of the Perak State Committee for Rural Development, Plantations, Agriculture, and Food Industry, and Dato' Haji Adnan bin Hussain, Director-General of Fisheries.

The new jetty, built along the banks of Sungai Batang Padang through collaboration between the Perak State Fisheries Department, State Government, and Federal Government, provides safer and more efficient landing facilities for fish catches.

“This jetty not only improves operational efficiency and safety but also reduces post-harvest losses, reflecting the government’s commitment to advancing the inland fisheries sector,” said Adnan.

A total of 85,000 native fish seeds, comprising 70,000 freshwater prawns and 15,000 baung fish, valued at RM15,000, were released into Sungai Batang Padang. This initiative aims to enrich local fishery stocks and boost fishermen’s income. In 2024, Perak made significant strides in conservation by releasing 2.69 million fish seeds into major rivers, with an allocation exceeding RM668,000.

During the same event, 12 Community Chairpersons for the Perak Urban Fisheries Project received their Letters of Appointment. The project focuses on aquaculture in abandoned mining areas to empower rural economies and the B40 group, covering villages such as Changkat Bendera, Kota Bharu, and Taman Aman.

In 2023, Perak recorded an inland fish landing of 3,290.19 metric tons, valued at over RM50 million, with 1,697 active inland fishermen. In 2024, RM1.51 million was distributed to 509 recipients through the Inland Fishermen’s Living Allowance, providing a monthly payment of RM250.

The event highlighted strong collaboration between technical departments, security agencies, and fishing communities, reinforcing an integrated approach to developing the fisheries sector. The Department of Fisheries Malaysia remains committed to ensuring the sustainability of fishery resources for the long-term benefit of the people.
