KUCHING, April 23, 2025 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dato’ Johari Abdul expressed pride in delivering the opening address at the Women in ASEAN Parliaments Assembly (WAIPA) 2025, a platform uniting women leaders from across ASEAN to champion inclusive, innovative, and diverse parliamentary representation.

Speaking on the theme “Leading Innovation, Inclusivity, and Diversity through Gender-Balanced Parliaments for ASEAN’s Future Readiness,” Johari emphasized its timeliness amid global changes. He underscored the need for ASEAN to evolve not only in policy but also in leadership structures and values.

Johari highlighted persistent barriers such as stereotypes, structural inequalities, and gender biases that hinder women’s rightful place in leadership.

“Malaysia is committed to going beyond policy-setting, ensuring implementation is rooted in institutions and societal norms,” he said, stressing the need for sustained efforts to elevate women in politics and careers for fairer, more comprehensive policies.

He extended gratitude to ASEAN delegates for their participation and the Sarawak state government for their steadfast support in making WAIPA a success.
