PUTRAJAYA, July 24, 2024 – In a press conference held yesterday, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo presented the latest report on the CrowdStrike issue that has affected information technology systems worldwide, including our country last Friday.

According to Gobind, although the incident occurred due to a weakness in the CrowdStrike software update and not a cyber attack, the government still takes the matter seriously and remains committed to strengthening governance to better face current and future challenges.

“I have also announced several government plans to address the issue of cyberbullying. Among them is the establishment of a committee involving the Digital Ministry, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Communications, and the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform).

We will conduct a thorough review of the Penal Code (Act 574) to address cyberbullying, and the amendments will be presented in Parliament this coming October,” said Gobind.

The CrowdStrike incident has affected several organizations in Malaysia, including five (5) government agencies. The agencies involved are the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Education Malaysia, the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, the National Institute of Health, and the Kedah State Zakat Board.

It has caused disruptions to Microsoft operating systems, and users have been unable to access their computer systems.
