CYBERJAYA, 2 April 2025 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has summoned two individuals, who served as the main administrators of a Facebook (FB) group, to provide statements regarding the dissemination of information and comments believed to potentially incite racial and religious tensions, thereby threatening public order.
The statement recording session took place on 27 March 2025, starting at 9:00 PM, at the MCMC Headquarters in Cyberjaya, following complaints received from the public. During the session, a mobile phone and a SIM card were seized as part of the evidence-gathering process.
The case is being investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588]. If found guilty, the individuals involved could face a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
In a related development, MCMC submitted 110 requests to Meta to remove racially charged content from the FB group in question. Of these, Meta confirmed that 106 pieces of content violated Facebook’s Community Standards and have been taken down.
MCMC has urged the public not to misuse online platforms to spread content that could provoke hatred towards any race or religion. Such actions not only violate the law but also jeopardize the harmony of Malaysia’s multi-racial society.
