KUALA LUMPUR, 29 March 2025 – Malaysia has expressed profound sorrow and sympathy over the earthquake that struck Myanmar, which also significantly impacted Thailand, a neighboring country within the ASEAN community.
According to reports, the disaster has claimed lives, caused serious injuries, and damaged buildings and public infrastructure in both nations. More heartbreakingly, victims remain trapped under rubble, while rescue teams work tirelessly under challenging conditions.
“Malaysia stands firmly with the people of Myanmar and Thailand during this difficult time. We will continue to play an active role in humanitarian assistance efforts in the region,” said Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, in a statement on his official X page.
Ahmad Zahid added that, as a gesture of regional solidarity, Malaysia is fully committed to assisting the affected countries. The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) has been deployed to Myanmar and is scheduled to arrive in Yangon today at around 1:00 PM to support search and rescue (SAR) operations in the hardest-hit areas.
Additionally, a humanitarian mission to Thailand is being coordinated and will be launched in the near future.
“The Malaysian government, through the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), is determined to strengthen regional cooperation by providing expertise, technical assets, and logistical support to alleviate the suffering of victims and expedite recovery efforts,” Ahmad Zahid stated.
