KUALA LUMPUR, 28 March 2025 – The Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari Abdul, today expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with the people of Myanmar and Thailand affected by two powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquakes centered in Sagaing, Myanmar, which struck at noon earlier today.
According to reports, one person has been confirmed dead and 50 others injured in Bangkok after a high-rise building collapsed due to the tremors. In a statement, Johari extended his condolences to the victim’s family and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured. “I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and hope that all those injured receive immediate treatment and a speedy recovery,” he said.
Highlighting Malaysia’s stance in this time of crisis, Johari emphasized the nation’s support for its neighbors.
“In these challenging moments, we in Malaysia stand united with the people of Myanmar, Thailand, and all those impacted. I pray that they are granted strength and resilience to face this disaster,” he added. He also expressed hope that relief and rescue efforts would be expedited and carried out effectively to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
As part of the broader ASEAN family, Johari stressed the collective responsibility to foster regional unity and support.
“We have a shared duty to strengthen our sense of togetherness, enhance regional ties, and extend assistance and support to our neighboring countries in times of hardship,” he said.
In these critical moments, he underscored the importance of solidarity within the region.
“It is our obligation to stand shoulder to shoulder, demonstrate solidarity, and ensure that no member state is left to face challenges alone,” Johari concluded.
