BANGI, 26 March 2025 – A significant meeting took place this morning at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), chaired by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Dato’ Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. The meeting was the first 2025 session of the Steering Committee for the Strategic Collaboration Project on Education and Research Activities in Forensic Science between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and UKM.
DIG Dato’ Sri Ayob Khan arrived at 8:30 a.m. and was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Director of Narcotics (Enforcement/Prevention/General Policing), Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) Bukit Aman, SAC Mohd Zaki Ashar, and the Senior Assistant Director of Narcotics JSJN Bukit Aman, ACP Hj. Ahmad Azwan Amin Nordin. The meeting focused on discussing more innovative and strategic collaboration efforts between PDRM and UKM to develop internationally recognized technology and research to comprehensively tackle drug-related issues and New Psychoactive Substances (NPS).
In his speech, DIG Dato’ Sri Ayob Khan emphasized that this collaboration has yielded significant results, particularly in enhancing PDRM’s capabilities to combat drug crimes.
“I am confident that this program can serve as a leading model in the effort to eradicate drug abuse in Malaysia. I hope this partnership will not be limited to research and training but will also involve sustainable capacity building,” he said.
Prior to the meeting, DIG Dato’ Sri Ayob Khan visited the CSI I Laboratory at UKM’s Faculty of Health Sciences. He observed a demonstration of cutting-edge technology, including the TIMS-TOF Pro 2 and DART, high-speed 4D-Multiomics tools capable of detecting drugs in urine and sewage samples with exceptional sensitivity. A briefing on the operations of the NPS drug laboratory was also presented by Associate Professor Dr. Khairul Osman, a lecturer at the faculty.
He also had the honor of officiating the use of the TIMS-TOF Pro 2 equipment, which will be utilized by PDRM in collaboration with UKM. The visit continued to the UKM Data Center and Information Technology Center, key facilities supporting this collaborative project.
Also present at the event were UKM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation Affairs), Prof. Dato’ Wan Kamal Mujani, Deputy Chairman II of the Steering Committee, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Kassim, along with senior PDRM and UKM officials and media representatives. This partnership is expected to serve as a vital pillar in ensuring Malaysia remains resilient in facing the challenges of drug crimes and NPS in the future.
