Johor, 24 March 2025 – Heavy rain that persisted for two days starting 19 March 2025 has triggered flooding across various areas in Johor since 20 March 2025. The parliamentary constituencies of Pasir Gudang, Tebrau, Pulai, Iskandar Puteri, and Kulai were among the hardest hit, with areas such as Kangkar Tebrau, Bukit Mutiara, Skudai, and Perling recording the most critical situations, according to the DAP Johor Action Unit (UT).
Taman Tampoi Utama made history as it experienced flooding for the first time in 20 years. Despite the severity of the floods, no fatalities were reported, with only minor injuries sustained by victims during their evacuation to Temporary Relief Centers (PPS).
In Perling, electricity supply had to be cut off in line with the standard operating procedure (SOP) of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) when water levels reached 4 feet, affecting more than 11,000 residents.
Swift Response from DAP Johor Action Unit
The DAP Johor Action Unit (UT) was among the first to respond, deploying assistance to affected areas as early as the morning of 20 March 2025. Led by Koh Chia Heng, the UT team covered Tebrau, Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang, Pulai, and Kulai. A total of 50 UT volunteers participated in this relief mission.

One critical incident occurred at SK Tampoi Utama, where 39 students and teachers were stranded until late into the night on 20 March. The UT team collaborated with the Fire Department and the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to safely evacuate them to a PPS.
The DAP Johor Committee also contributed an initial fund of RM5,000 to purchase cleaning equipment, food for volunteers, and other essentials to ensure the smooth operation of UT’s efforts. Additionally, eight RORO bins were ordered to assist in cleanup efforts alongside SWM Environment, arriving at the affected areas on 22 March 2025. Food donations from the public were successfully collected and distributed to victims and PPS centers.
Hopes and Challenges Ahead
In a joint statement, DAP Johor Deputy Chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Bin Ali and Koh Chia Heng expressed gratitude to the Johor Menteri Besar for announcing financial aid for flood victims. However, they emphasized the urgent need for immediate action from SWM and local authorities (PBT) to expedite recovery efforts, especially with Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaching next week.
“The cleanup of rubbish and removal of damaged furniture piled up in front of homes must be addressed promptly. We are concerned that these piles could pose health risks to residents if not resolved quickly,” they said.
The DAP Johor UT remains committed to assisting flood victims and ensuring a swift recovery ahead of the festive season.
