JOHOR BAHRU, 20 March 2025 – Johor DAP Vice-Chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib bin Ali today reminded PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang that the proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to two terms is not new and had even received PAS’s support twice, during the 1999 and 2004 General Elections (GE).

In his media statement, Sheikh Umar referred to Abdul Hadi’s writing titled ‘Prioritizing DAP’s Proposal Over God’s Decree’, which raised concerns about the proposal. He noted that PAS, while allied with DAP, the National Justice Party (PKN), and the Malaysian People’s Party (PRM) in the Barisan Alternatif (BA) coalition in 1999, had also proposed the same idea ahead of the 1999 GE.

“PAS and PKR reiterated this proposal during the 2004 GE, by which time DAP had left BA in 2001. So, this proposal was once PAS’s stance without any objections like those raised by Hadi yesterday,” he said.

Sheikh Umar added that the proposal put forward by DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke at the party’s recent congress is actually in line with what PAS had supported in the past. He also criticized Abdul Hadi’s apparent shifting stance for political gain.

“I advise Hadi to look in the mirror. Back then, he stayed silent when he agreed, but now he’s searching for a thousand excuses to oppose it. This isn’t the mature politics PAS claims to champion,” he asserted.

He stated that there was no need to go to great lengths to counter Abdul Hadi’s arguments, instead urging the PAS leader to “fight forgetfulness” and recall his party’s position 26 years ago.
