BARCELONA, 7 March 2025 – Malaysia has achieved a notable milestone in its 5G journey as ZTE clinched the coveted “GSMA Foundry Innovation Award – Minimalist Private 5G for Entertainment” at the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards during MWC Barcelona 2025. The award celebrates ZTE’s groundbreaking 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technology, which powered the world’s first 5G-A live broadcast of the Malaysia National Multi-Sport Games (SUKMA 2024), in collaboration with CelcomDigi, U Mobile, and RTM.

Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching, hailed the achievement as a proud moment for the nation.

“This recognition underscores Malaysia’s leadership in 5G innovation within ASEAN. It showcases our dedication to improving connectivity, embracing cutting-edge technology, and enhancing the lives of our people. We’re committed to fostering regional collaboration and demonstrating the possibilities when ambition meets innovation,” she said.

Malaysia’s 5G deployment has reached an impressive 82.4% of populated areas, driving the adoption of advanced applications like the SUKMA 2024 broadcast. This progress aligns with the National Digital Infrastructure Plan (JENDELA), which aims to provide high-speed internet access to more Malaysians, boosting digital engagement and content accessibility nationwide.

The SUKMA 2024 broadcast stood out as a game-changer, leveraging 5G-A to deliver an immersive viewing experience. Featuring 360° cameras, virtual reality (VR) access, and a blazing 2Gbps uplink speed with just 100ms latency, the event captivated audiences, amassing 85 million views across television and social media in just one week.

The successful partnership between RTM, CelcomDigi, U Mobile, and ZTE highlighted Malaysia’s technical prowess and its growing status as a regional connectivity hub. This collaboration showcased how a unified mobile network ecosystem can push boundaries, delivering transformative experiences for consumers and reinforcing Malaysia’s economic presence in the region.

The GLOMO Award win at MWC Barcelona 2025 reaffirms Malaysia’s strategic push toward a future-ready digital landscape. The innovative use of 5G-A at SUKMA 2024 not only elevated live event broadcasting but also set the stage for broader technological advancements, cementing Malaysia’s role as a pioneer in next-generation connectivity.
