KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA 19 Feb 2025 – The Madani Government will not adopt a lackadaisical attitude in ensuring the nation’s security remains intact, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He stated that the threats of violent crimes and organized crime still persist, necessitating effective laws to address them.

“However, at the same time, we also need to examine areas for improvement to ensure a balance between national security and the people’s fundamental rights.

“The Madani Government’s commitment is to always be prepared to enhance existing policies, ensuring that every step taken prioritizes the well-being of the people and the security of the nation,” he said.

According to Saifuddin, the Madani Government is committed to maintaining a balance between national security and justice for those involved under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA).

He explained that during his presentation in the Dewan Rakyat (Lower House of Parliament) yesterday, he outlined three main focuses concerning Act 747, or SOSMA, which are currently being addressed.

“The review of non-bailable offenses is underway. A total of 73 offenses under this act will be re-examined.

“We will scrutinize the categories of offenses that should remain non-bailable and those that can be left to the discretion of the courts,” he said.

Saifuddin added that a proposal has been made to establish a special SOSMA court to ensure cases under SOSMA are not delayed for too long.

He said the government is considering the establishment of such a special court, similar to those already implemented for corruption cases, child sexual crimes, environmental issues, cybercrimes, and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM).

He also noted that a study on amending Section 30, which pertains to temporary detention, will be conducted.

“Section 30, related to temporary detention pending legal processes, will be reviewed.

“This is in line with the proposed amendments to Section 13 regarding bail for certain categories of cases,” he said.

Furthermore, he added that as the next step, he will immediately establish a special committee to thoroughly refine these proposals.

“The sooner this committee completes its findings, the faster we can table amendments that are fairer and more effective in Parliament.

“The government listens, studies, and acts for the well-being of the people and the security of the nation,” he concluded
